2017 Florida Governor’s Summit

Disability History and Awareness Weeks Kickoff
On October 4, 2017, The Florida Department of Education kicked off its Disability History and Awareness Weeks opening ceremony. Disability History and Awareness Weeks are observed October 2-13 as an opportunity to reflect on the valuable contributions individuals with disabilities make to the State of Florida. Speakers included Division of Public Schools Chancellor Hershel Lyons, Division of Blind Services Director Robert L. Doyle III, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Director Allison Flanagan and former VR Director Aleisa McKinlay. There was also special performance by the Electric People band.
Dads Take Your Child to School Day 2017
On September 21, 2017, The Florida Department of Education kicked off the 2017 Dads Take Your Child to School Day initiative in Duval County at Venetia Elementary School. The goal was to encourage all Floridian fathers and male role models, including our selfless heroes that serve and protect our great country, to take an active role in their child’s education. 2018 Macy’s/Florida Teacher of the Year
On July 13, 2017, Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott announced Tammy Jerkins, a high school math teacher at Leesburg High School in Lake County, as the 2018 Florida Department of Education/Macy’s Teacher of the Year. Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart and Dennis Witte, Macy’s Executive Vice President Regional Director of Stores, joined Governor Scott to make the announcement at the annual awards ceremony honoring the state’s top educators. 2017 Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards
On June 14, 2017, Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart honored 44 Florida businesses with the Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award. The award recognizes businesses for their extraordinary contributions to public education in Florida. The Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards, presented by Wells Fargo, are administered by the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Education Foundation to encourage successful alliances within the business community and among local school districts for the benefit of Florida’s students. Other sponsors of the 30th annual awards program are MGT Consulting Group, Florida Power and Light, Kyra Solutions, and Gray-Robinson Attorneys at Law.
