10th annual Nephi’s Steel Bow Competition
The 10th annual Nephi’s Steel Bow Competition was another success, providing students a chance to design, build, and test bows that they built. The competition required additional engineering this time as students were required to predict the distance their arrows would travel for a given draw weight.
Outstanding TA Award
ME student Teaching Assistant – Ryan Anderson received excellent ratings from the students he aided in the 2017 winter semester. He received the Outstanding TA Award from the department for his above and beyond attention to detail and exemplary work.
Master’s Student Earns Prestigious SMART Award
Cody Carpenter, a Master’s student in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Brigham Young University, has recently been awarded a US Department of Defense Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship.

BYU Develops Helmet Smartfoam
BYU mechanical engineering PhD student, Jake Merrell, and a team of researchers across three BYU departments have developed and tested a nano composite smartfoam that can be placed inside a football helmet (and pads) to more accurately test the impact and power of hits.
